Forecast for the weekend... it’ll be astronomical
Friday, 5 September 2008
The massive Planetlove 10-year-anniversary bash dominates the music scene this weekend, with luminaries from Tiesto to Shaun Ryder to Mani to Judge Jules joining 100 other DJs at Shane’s Castle.
Northern Ireland has had more than its fair share of festivals over the summer and this weekend sees the season come to an end with a massive outdoor dance event, expected to attract tens of thousands of clubbers.
Planetlove is marking its tenth anniversary with its biggest and most ambitious outing yet, taking place tonight and tomorrow in the grounds of the historic Shane's Castle in Co Antrim.
For the first time, camping facilities are provided and the usual thrills and spills of a funfair, as well as full bar and dining facilities, are being laid on for revellers throughout the weekend.
Tonight's headliner Tiesto is bringing his ‘In Search Of Sunshine' tour to the event and is set to treat festival-goers to his fully-choreographed DJ set, complete with all the elements which have scored the title of being the world's best DJ.
The Dutch trancemeister regularly packs out stadiums across the world, including London's 02 Arena which he sold out last month and earned the accolade of being the first DJ ever to headline one of the UK's biggest indoor arena.
On Saturday, headlining Aussie electro act Pendulum, who rocked Oxegen in July shortly after their single Propane Nightmares entered the UK Singles Chart's Top 10, play their first ever gig north of the border.
Over the weekend, ten arenas will be hosting live and DJ performances from over 100 different acts playing a variety of genres, ranging from the cream of Irish dance artists, to some of the world's best known mixers.
Highlights include local talents Jordan X and Phil Kieran, as well as international superstars such as Judge Jules, Lisa Lashes, Mauro Picotto, Ferry Corsten, Marco V, Dave Clarke and Slam.
The exclusive VIP arena will be soundtracked by Madchester mixers Shaun Ryder and ex-Stone Roses bassist Mani, as well as old-skool ravers Utah Saints and the Cool FM posse.
The new 10 Years Of Love arena features ten DJs who played Planetlove over the past decade, each playing the biggest hits from the year in which they performed, starting with Dave Pearce's 1998 set, through to Marcel Woods who represents 2008.
Despite their usual ‘Monthly Saturdays' status, Shine is back again at Queen's Union tonight with a special one-off outing, featuring a four-hour set by French techno wizard Laurent Garnier.
The Gallic mixer was instrumental in launching the Madchester sound back in the late Eighties where his gigs at the legendary Hacienda club inspired bands including Happy Mondays and Stone Roses to add dance rhythms to rock music.
Support comes courtesy of Shine regulars Timmy Stewart, Simon McDermott and Alan Simms, with tickets priced at £20, (£18 for students and members) available from Zavvi, Stiff Kitten and from the venue itself.
Mish Mash, a new club night for Thursdays, launched last week at Cathedral Quarter venue Mynt with guest and resident DJs playing out a student-friendly mix of indie, rock and club anthems. Running from 10pm until 3am, the club will be providing a free bus service, picking up from points around the city including student halls of residence, Dublin Road and the City Hall.
If the thought of short skirts, white shirts and DJ Dave's cheesy tunes tickles your pickle, Skool Disco is back at The Limelight on Thursday, complete with the usual bike shed-based shenanigans.
