In Pictures: Duffy takes three Brit Awards as Coldplay are given the Elbow
Thursday, 19 February 2009
Coldplay flopped at the Brits last night, walking away empty handed despite being nominated for four awards.
Less than a month after they scooped three Grammys in the US, Chris Martin's band were snubbed by the British music industry.

Singer-songwriter Duffy was the big winner on the night, taking three awards: best album, best British female solo artist and best breakthrough act.
The gongs cap a superb year for the smoky-voiced siren from north Wales.
Her record Rockferry was the best-selling album of 2008 and shifted 4.5 million copies around the world.
She beat Adele, Beth Rowley, Estelle and M.I.A. for the best female solo award.
Adele can take comfort in her recent Grammy success, where she picked up best new artist and best female pop vocal performance.
Tonight's glitzy ceremony, which unlike previous years seemed to pass off without controversy, was hosted by Kylie Minogue and Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Mathew Horne.
The event at London's Earls Court was also a triumph for perennial indie underdogs Elbow.
After nearly two decades of performing together, the Bury outfit took the Brit for best group.
The Seldom Seen Kid, their first album after a long break from the studio, also won the Mercury Prize last year.
Girls Aloud, U2, Kings of Leon and Duffy were among the stars to perform on the night.
The Brits Academy, made up of 1,000 invited music industry insiders and critics, decided eight of the evening's awards.
Former Style Council and Jam frontman Paul Weller took the award for best British male, beating Will Young, The Streets - aka Mike Skinner, James Morrison and former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown.
The award for Weller was far from unexpected - William Hill closed the book on him over the weekend after a deluge of bets.
Veteran rockers Iron Maiden took the best live act award, which was voted for by Radio 2 listeners.
The Pet Shop Boys took the Outstanding Contribution to Music award, while Florence & the Machine were named critics' choice.
In the international categories, the Kings of Leon won best album and best group, while rapper Kanye West took best male.
Katy Perry was named best international female.

Music is a weird thing. Coldplay leaves me cold, that's all. I never liked U2 either, don't know why.
Rammstein on the other hand, make me wish I could play the bass guitar, and if I were younger I'd probably get a tattoo.
Joy Division I love. Also Cocteau Twins. And the Smiths/Morrissey.
Snow Patrol are great too.

It cracks me up when people base their opinion of a bands music, based on the front man. In the case of Chris Martin, some people can't stand the fact that he is Successful, Talented, Has the right attitude to the music industry, Has an opinion about Poverty and is married and has two beautiful kids with Ms Paltrow. Maybe 'some people' are jealous Hmmm??????
How about forgetting about Chris and just open your mind a little to what Coldplay have to offer. It may open up a whole new world of music.

Rammstein!! Go Sharon :)
But Coldplay are amazing... I don't get why everyone complains about Chris Martin. Seriously though why??
Oh & Coldplay over Snow Patrol anyday. But I do still like Snow Patrol lol
Favourite band Metallica ;)

I'm sorry did I miss something. Why are people feeling the need to compare U2 and Coldplay? Have you actually listened to U2 or Coldplay's music??? The common element between them is they have both held the crowd for the most successful band in the world at various points in their careers and whether you like it or not Coldplay is the current holder of such a title. Not an opinion, just a statisical fact. Look at the sales of their recent album.
I think it's a shame that the Brits decided not to honour Coldplay for their success with any awards at last night ceremony. It seems that yet again this band can only be truly recognised for their talent further afield, as most recently seen at the Grammys.

Cold Patrol or Snow Play? They all sound the same these days. All these overly earnest lead singers who feign deep concern about, well, just about everything fashionable. Then there's our newest oldtimers U2 who are a pale shade of what they once were and who are now releasing songs that sound like Lady Gaga shouting with a bunch of drunk rugby players at a rave about people putting on their boots. Still at least U2 aren't as dull as Kings of Leon, Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs and all the other current boring guitar-rock bands who just bore the bejayzuz out of anyone with a decent ear for music.

what are you two on about! they are NOTHING alike! even though Chris Martin loves to think they are. Coldplay will never fill U2's boots.

Having seen both live on several occasions, Coldplay wins.

Dear RB,
I don't like U2 either. I'm more into Rammstein these days - now those guys are some serious rockers!!! Check out any of their albums - all brilliant.
Even Morrissey and his NHS hearing aid had more to say for himself than Chris Martin.
Rock on!!!

Coldplay are nothing like U2..ffs...some folks could possibly do with listening to music!
Posted by RB | 19.02.09, 15:09 GMT
coldplay are watered down u2- although U2 are crap - which doesn't say much for Chris Martin et all

Never did like Coldplay - they're like a watered-down version of U2 - but without the sex-appeal.
