It’s the real thing as The Charlatans get ready to rock Belfast

Tuesday, 12 August 2008

Indie rockers The Charlatans — who are approaching their 20th anniversary — have confirmed a Belfast date as part of their forthcoming nationwide tour.

The band, which formed in 1989 and have notched up 10 studio albums and over 20 hit singles since then, will play the Spring and Airbrake on October 1.

Earlier this year The Charlatans became the first UK band to release an album — You Cross My Path — completely free to downloads via radio station Xfm.

At the time lead singer Tim Burgess, who lives in Los Angeles, said the band’s mission was just to get their music out there and into as many people’s iPods as possible.

Burgess looked to the music of his youth — tracks by Grandmaster Flash, New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen — for inspiration on the new album and reckons it is one of the best albums to dates.

The band continues to be one of the most inspirational in the UK music scene and one of the earliest singles, The Only One I Know, is still considered an indie classic.

And they have also been name-checked by leading DJ/producer Mark Ronson as the group who got him into music.

Ronson included a rendition of The Only One I Know on his Version album, sung by Robbie Williams and Burgess has performed the song on stage with Ronson.

Burgess said: “He introduces me as the person that got him into music, which is quite humbling really. The first time we ever played in New York, he snuck out to see us. He was only 13 years old and then did a paper at school about his favourite band, which was us.”

Tickets to see The Charlatans are priced £25 and go on sale this Friday, August 15.
