Katy Perry: I was in a darker place

Katy Perry has recalled the dark depression she suffered following her split from Russell Brand.

The couple met at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2009, married a year later and then split after 14 months.

Katy fought back tears as she opened up about her emotional pain during that time to Australian television show The Project.

Speaking backstage at the Perth Arena ahead of her concert, Katy recalled: " It was sad and there were thoughts, but there were never actions, thankfully."

Katy, 30, was speaking about how her feelings of depression had inspired her song By The Grace Of God, which she hopes will help people going through similar experiences to feel they are not alone.

She said: "Then there's By The Grace Of God, w hich is the first song that I wrote coming to make this record, when I was in a different place, I was in a darker place...

"Sometimes you can be blinded by your extreme emotion... I definitely was looking for answers during that time.

"You always feel like you're the only one going through that.

"Well then comes along a song that speaks to you, that makes you feel like, 'Gosh, I can get through this. If she can get through this, I can get through this'."
