Kinks' Ray Davies reveals Welsh ban

Ray Davies has told how he was banned from the Welsh town of Neath 50 years ago - and has been too scared to go back.

The 69-year-old Kinks star was speaking at the Hay Festival in Wales to promote his new book Americana: The Kinks, The Riff, The Road: The Story.

According to the Daily Mirror, Ray recalled : "I was banned from Neath.

"I did a gig there in the early Kinks days and there was an altercation in the dressing room.

"The promoter, who was wearing a bow tie, rushed out and shouted after me, 'You're finished in Neath, Davies!' and I've never been back."

The Waterloo Sunset star also spoke about being shot in New Orleans 10 years ago.

The veteran rocker recalled how, despite the Kinks' success in America, he woke up in hospital to find he was wearing a name tag that read "Unknown Purple", as nobody knew who he was.

Ray said: "It was a very humbling experience."
