Lady Gaga calls critics 'retarded'
Lady Gaga has lashed out at claims her hit Born This Way is a copy of Madonna's Express Yourself, branding the accusations "retarded".
The eccentric singer told NME she believes the only similarity between her song and Madonna's 1989 track was "the chord progression. The same one that's been in disco music for the last 50 years."
Lady Gaga said: "I am not stupid enough to put a record out and be that moronic. Why would I try to put a song out and think I'm getting one over on everybody? That's retarded."
The 25-year-old singer's comments have been criticised by mental health charity Mencap, which said her use of the word "retarded" was a "slur" against people with learning disabilities.
Lady Gaga has always been open about what a big fan of Madonna she is, calling the star her "idol" and admitting she has influenced her style and music.
Earlier this year she revealed Madonna had written to her to give Born This Way her blessing.
Lady Gaga said: "There is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me. I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.
"Well the good news is that I got an email from her people and her sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single. If the queen says it shall be, then it shall be."
