Mikey Graham of Boyzone chats with Gardai about the arrangements for the funeral

It was a sad and lonely end to a short life and amazing career.

Although he was adored by millions, yesterday morning Boyzone star Stephen Gately began the journey home alone to his native Dublin.

With his name and destination written outside the coffin in black marker, strangers loaded his body onto a hearse and drove it to the airport where it was placed in the cargo hold overnight.

His body will be collected later today by the four remaining members of Boyzone and members of his family.

But for the previous 24 hours Stephen was alone.

The body will be flown home today by private plane.

Yesterday solicitor Gerald Kean said Stephen's family “just want to bring him home”.

He said the remaining band members — Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch — have been a huge support to Stephen's family.

The band and two family members will bring the body home from Majorca today.

He will be buried in Dublin tomorrow afternoon.
