Sixties chart star Donovan - famed for hits such as Mellow Yellow and Sunshine Superman - is to be presented with a lifetime achievement award.

The flower power legend, who has worked with leading figures such as Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan, will be honoured at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards next month.

Scottish-born Donovan Leitch had a run of hits in the late 1960s in the UK and the US, bringing folk to the fore. A friend of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, he is also credited with teaching Sir Paul McCartney his finger-picking style and was sometimes seen as the UK's answer to Dylan.

Also receiving an honorary award at the event will be shanty singers Fisherman's Friends, who are to be given the "good tradition" award to mark last year's achievement of landing the first album of traditional folk tunes to debut in the top 10.

The Folk Awards, now in their 12th year, will be co-hosted by Radio 2 presenter Mike Harding and singer Barbara Dickson on February 7.

Live performances during the show - to be broadcast live for the first time - at The Brewery in London include Donovan, Bellowhead, Kate Rusby, Chris Wood, and Dickson.

Nominees for the awards include folk big band Bellowhead, who are shortlisted for four prizes - best group, best live act, best album for Hedonism and best traditional track for New York Girls. In addition, frontman Jon Boden is nominated in the folk singer of the year category, a title he collected in 2010.

Radio 2 head of music Jeff Smith said: "Radio 2 supports an eclectic mix of over 20 music genres, and folk is integral to this offering."
