McCartney to play Motown piano

Sir Paul McCartney will play on an 1877 Steinway grand piano he discovered and had refurbished

An 1877 Steinway grand piano used by Motown artists has been restored, thanks to Sir Paul McCartney, who will be among the first to play the historic instrument.

The former Beatle will play the instrument with Berry Gordy, the architect of the Motown music label.

Motown Museum Board of Trustees chairwoman Robin Terry says the two music legends will play the Victorian rosewood grand during a benefit event in New York on September 18.

Robin said in an interview that Berry and Sir Paul "will play the piano, and we'll have some fun and leave it to them to make of that what they will".

She said Sir Paul had put his soul into making sure the piano was properly restored.
