Mel Giedroyc to narrate Top Of The Pops: The Story Of 1981

Bake Off presenter Mel Giedroyc will narrate a new BBC Four documentary about Top Of The Pops.

The Story Of 1981 w ill recount the arrival of new pop, with contributors including Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Kim Wilde and The Human League.

Unlike their punk predecessors, the stars of 1981 embraced mainstream TV show Top Of The Pops as they re-shaped pop music.

The BBC music show also changed, with young dancers joining the audiences as "cheerleaders" and creating a party atmosphere.

The rise of music videos meant bands no longer had to perform in the Top Of The Pops studio. Instead, stars including Adam Ant and Ultravox sent in their own videos.

1981 also saw The Specials perform Ghost Town on the show, capturing Britain's mood with ongoing rioting and unemployment, before the band split up in their dressing room.

This will be the sixth documentary on the Top Of The Pops years, which began with The Story Of 1976 in 2011.

Other contributors to the latest programme include Jerry Dammers, Midge Ure, Leee John, Richard Skinner and Mike Read.

Top Of The Pops: The Story Of 1981 will be transmitted in January.
