Midnight Memories top-selling album

One Direction's Midnight Memories has been crowned the UK's top-selling album of 2013.

The boyband have sold 685,000 copies of the album since it was released at the end of November, according to the Official Charts Company.

Scottish singer Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events - which was the biggest-selling album of 2012 - took second place this year with 683,000 copies.

One Direction star Liam Payne said: "This tops an amazing year for us. We're so excited to have the biggest selling album in the UK this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has bought the album."

No one album has sold one million copies this year.

According to a report last month by Music Week, 2013 would be the first time since the 1980s that there has been no million-album-selling artist in the UK if no act managed to hit the mark before the end of the year.

Emeli's Our Version Of Events, which has sold more than two million copies since it was first released 22 months ago, was the only million-selling artist album of 2012.

Midnight Memories is One Direction's third album and debuted at number one on its release.
