MTV scouts have visited Belfast to check out the city’s suitability to host next year’s MTV European Music Awards.

Belfast is bidding to stage the 2012 event as part of a major three-year strategy to put the city on the map as a “world class music destination” by the council and tourism bosses.

The star-studded bash, which attracts global performers including U2, Jay-Z, Madonna and Lady GaGa, has been held in Dublin before, as well as Paris, Berlin, London and Milan.

It is understood the MTV scouts visited a number of key venues while in the province this week, including the Odyssey Arena and the north coast.

A decision on the host city will be revealed in the next few weeks.
