Belfast is bidding to stage the 2012 event as part of a major three-year strategy to put the city on the map as a “world class music destination” by the council and tourism bosses.
The star-studded bash, which attracts global performers including U2, Jay-Z, Madonna and Lady GaGa, has been held in Dublin before, as well as Paris, Berlin, London and Milan.
It is understood the MTV scouts visited a number of key venues while in the province this week, including the Odyssey Arena and the north coast.
A decision on the host city will be revealed in the next few weeks.

It feels like friends are few and far between. If you're not getting the help you need, ask why. It may be because you have been so preoccupied with work.
