Victoria Beckham says she was ‘a bit lost’ when she sang solo
Victoria Beckham has admitted her much-mocked efforts at a solo chart career were a “mistake”.
The former Spice Girl, who has now transformed herself into a fashion designer, claimed the whole episode was because she was a “bit lost”.
Beckham was caught up in an infamous chart battle with Sophie Ellis-Bextor for her first effort outside her girl group — teaming up with Truesteppers and Dane Bowers for Out Of Your Mind — and was beaten to No.1 in 2000. However, she managed three more top 10 hits over the next few years, her last in 2004.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine she said: “People never believed the solo singing career, and it wasn’t the real me — I was a little bit lost at the time. I don’t mind making mistakes, I just can’t live with anyone else’s mistakes.
“I’m a complete control freak. I’m not the easiest person to work with because I’m so passionate, and being a working mum it’s a balancing act.”
Beckham is the cover star of the new edition of the magazine, out on Thursday, in which she features in a series of noir-style fashion shots wearing outfits such as an Yves Saint Laurent leather bodysuit.
She says fashion is her true calling rather than the years of performance for which she trained.
“I just want to learn as much as I can. I was always pushed into the theatre and dance — it’s just taken me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do.”
