Oasis set for return to Belfast
Friday, 15 August 2008
Rock giants Oasis are set to kick off a spectacular season of concerts at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast with two Halloween shows, the Telegraph can reveal today.
The band return to the Odyssey - after a three-year break - on Wednesday, October 29 and Thursday, October 30.
The last time they played Belfast, a double date on December 18 and 19, 2005, the legendary band broke all previous box records, selling out tickets in 14 minutes.
Coincidentally, rock rivals Coldplay, who were also in Belfast the same month three years ago, will be back again this December — playing the 18 and 19.
Oasis, who release their seventh studio album Dig Out Your Soul on October 6, are the latest act to announce an Odyssey show in the coming autumn/winter months.
Among the other top acts lined up to play are McFly (November 10), Paul Weller (November 11), Simple Minds/Deacon Blue (December 6), Coldplay, (December 18/19), Kings Of Leon (December 20) and Counting Crows (December 21).
Oasis were at the helm of the Britpop movement in the early 1990s, with their first album Definitely Maybe becoming the fastest selling debut in UK history.
Their second album What’s The Story (Morning Glory?) was a massive worldwide hit and spawned the anthem Wonderwall.
By the time the band’s third album was released, Be Here Now, there was so much hype around them, it sold over 350,000 units by the end of the first day of release.
A number of line-up changes followed and Oasis were often plagued with reports of feuding between the Gallagher Brothers, Liam and Noel.
Like the previous three albums, the next few all charted at number one — Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants and Heathen Chemistry.
In 2005 they released another chart-topper, Don’t Believe The Truth, and embarked on a large-scale world wide tour, which included Belfast.
Ahead of the launch of their new album, Oasis release their new single The Shock of the Lightning on September 29.
Tickets go on sale at 9am on Wednesday, August 20, from Ticketmaster and via www.oasisinet.com
The tour will also take in Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham, London, Bournemouth, Cardiff, Aberdeen and Glasgow.
