Payne denies fake selfie smile

One Direction star Liam Payne has hit back at critics who complained of his "fake smile" at an awards ceremony, saying he can't be expected to look cheerful all the time.

The boy band heartthrob, who has screaming fans and hit tunes all over the world, claimed it was too much to ask for him to have a constant smile on his face.

Liam attended the Arias in Sydney with bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, but came under fire when a video from the red carpet showed him plastering on a smile for a series of selfies with adoring fans, then resuming his fed-up face between shots.

But Liam tweeted: "Lots of people saying I was 'faking' smiles with fans yesterday ...

"I usually find when ur taking a photo u don't smile until somebody's about to take the photo.

"Sorry to disappoint but I don't walk around like this all day... That would hurt!"

The star then captioned a photo of a grinning monkey covering its ears with: "Me," and finally added: "Woahhhh."
