Pixie Lott brings a little star appeal to Derry's concert bill

By Brendan McDaid

Pop princess Pixie Lott has been confirmed as a headline act for Londonderry’s Peace One Day concert next month.

Actor Jude Law will introduce the chart-topping Mama Do singer on stage at the event, which will mark the opening of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The announcement by the festival organsiers is expected to go some way towards addressing concerns about the concert.

There was a major outcry when it was revealed earlier this year that, contrary to earlier announcements, Massive Attack would not be headlining the event.

Tickets priced £22.50 are now on sale for the concert, which marks the first major musical event at Derry’s newly developed Ebrington Square.

Lott will join Imelda May, Newton Faulkner, The Guillemots, Wonder Villains and Peace One Day founder Jeremy Gilley for what will be the opening event of the London 2012 Festival.

London 2012 is a 12-week UK-wide celebration featuring leading artists from around the world.

The concert will be followed up by a second concert headlined by Elton John at Wembley on September 21, when it is hoped there will be a global truce in troubled areas across the world.

To date, Peace One Day has produced seven high-profile music-driven celebrations, including events at London’s O2 arena, the Royal Albert Hall, Brixton Academy, Le Grand Rex and Le Zenith, Paris.

Musicians who have performed include Annie Lennox, Lenny Kravitz, Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel, Kasabian, Corinne Bailey Rae, Dave Stewart, Marc Almond, Faithless, Patti Smith, Youssou Ndour, Vanessa Paradis, Ayo and Yodelice as well as special guests and hosts such as Sharon Stone, Jonny Lee Miller and Emilia Fox.

Pixie Lott released her debut single in 2009 and went straight to number one in the UK singles chart.

Her second single, Boys And Girls, also topped the UK charts in September 2009.

Her debut album Turn It Up was released in September 2009.

It reached number six on the UK albums chart, spawned five consecutive Top 20 singles, and sold over a million copies.

Her second album, Young Foolish Happy, was released on November 14, 2011. All About Tonight, the first single from that album, entered the charts at number one.

Tickets are now available at www.ticketmaster.ie or on 0844 2774455.
