Simple Minds headline Hogmanay bill

Jim Kerr of Simple Minds is looking forward to performing at the Hogmanay celebrations this year

Simple Minds are to headline Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations this year.

The Scottish rock band will perform a set of their greatest hits at the concert in West Princes Street Gardens, where they will be joined by The View and Bwani Junction.

Mercury Prize nominees The Maccabees will headline the Waverley Stage on Waverley Bridge. They will be joined by special guests Reverend And The Makers and up-and-coming Scottish act The OK Social Club.

Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr said: "We've played some iconic venues around the world - and Edinburgh's Hogmanay is right up there with the best of them.

"We are so excited to be coming home to Scotland, and Edinburgh, for this great celebration of the first 20 years of Hogmanay.

"It's going to be a fantastic experience for us and for the audience."

Elsewhere, the Scottish Stage will relocate to Frederick Street this year where some of the country's leading Celtic music acts will entertain the crowds.

Steve Cardownie, Edinburgh City Council's festivals and events champion, said: "This year we are celebrating 20 years of Edinburgh's Hogmanay and so I think it's fitting that we have one of Scotland's best-selling and most enduring bands as our headline act.

"Those of us who can remember the 1980s will know their hits well - but I'm sure the younger generation will also be singing their hearts out. Of course, with such a great line-up across all of our five stages, there will be something for revellers of all ages and tastes to enjoy."

Up to 80,000 revellers are expected to descend on the Scottish capital for the street party. There will be five live stages and countdown fireworks at 9pm, 10pm and 11pm, with the midnight display from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle.
