Singer Alesha joins airport staff

Alesha Dixon helps check in the Watt family on their way to Orlando

Alesha Dixon has confessed she was once so scared of flying she almost quit her pop career.

The Britain's Got Talent judge revealed she has conquered her fear and now loves flying, as she helped Thomson Airways celebrate the inaugural long haul flight of its 787 Dreamliner aircraft to Florida. The 34-year-old singer began her music career in girlband Mis-Teeq when she was a teenager.

Alesha revealed: "I used to be terrified of flying. I never really went on holiday growing up, so in the early days of Mis-Teeq, that was my first flight. I remember it was a flight to Brunei when I was about 19 years old.

"I actually remember being so scared one day to get on a flight, that I was considering quitting my job. I genuinely couldn't cope with the anxiety."

The Your Face Sounds Familiar presenter recalled how she used to rely on the cabin crew to help her get through her panic attacks.

"If there was turbulence, I used to sit there and my hands would be sweating and I'd cry," she revealed.

"They'd usually send out a member of the cabin crew to try and calm me down - that's how bad I was.

"So how I've got to this place where I am now when I actually look forward to getting on a plane is unbelievable. But I think that is purely from the amount of flights I've taken - obviously the more you do something the more relaxed you become.

"It was either, you've got to deal with this or change your job. So I did and now I really enjoy flying."

Thomson Airways will be taking delivery of eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners in total by May 2015. Thomson's first long-haul Dreamliner flights will operate from Manchester to Florida and Glasgow to Cancun.
