Smith scoops Billboard nominations
Singer Sam Smith will be pitted against One Direction, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift for the Top Artist gong at this year's Billboard Music Awards.
The British star, 22, is also up for Top Male Artist, Album for his debut In The Lonely Hour and Song for Stay With Me at May's ceremony.
Fellow Briton Ed Sheeran is up against Smith in the Male Artist category, as well as Canadian rapper Drake, Pharrell Williams and Justin Timberlake .
Smith's rivals for Billboard 200 Album are Sheeran (X), rockers Maroon 5 (V), US cappella group Pentatonix (That's Christmas To Me) and Taylor Swift (1989).
The Top Female category features Ariana Grande - who is also up for Top Artist - Iggy Azalea, Meghan Trainor, Perry and Swift.
Rapper Ludacris, who will be co-hosting the awards, announced five of the categories with Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz on US show Good Morning America.
The rest of the 41 categories are being unveiled later today.
The ceremony takes place on May 17 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Soul singer Smith recently triumphed at the Grammys, winning four gongs including record and song of the year.

Smith had a total of 13 nominations when the final list of categories was announced. Swift is one ahead with 14 and Iggy Azalea has 12. Hozier has been nominated for the Top New Artist gong.
