Stone Roses film 'dream come true'

Shane Meadows is a lifelong Stone Roses fan

Filmmaker Shane Meadows said being asked to make a documentary about The Stone Roses reunion was like his "wildest dreams were coming true".

The This is England director followed the band from the press conference announcing their comeback to their homecoming gigs at Manchester's Heaton Park for his film, The Stone Roses: Made of Stone.

The band, centred on the songwriting partnership of frontman Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire, released their acclaimed debut album in 1989 and played a landmark gig at Spike Island, near Widnes, a year later.

Their second album was delayed by record companies wrangles and eventually emerged in 1994 but the band fell apart in 1996.

Shane, a life-long fan, said: "When Ian Brown rang me to tell me my favourite band of all time was getting back together again, it was like every Roses fan's wildest dreams were coming true. People tell you that you can't recapture your youth, it won't be the same. I don't believe that.

"I'm going to make up for the nightmare of a lifetime at 17 years old, being sat in a flat having a bad trip when I could have been at Spike Island, being part of one of the most momentous things ever."

The film includes footage of the band's early rehearsals and subsequent performances on the road in Spain, Germany and Japan.

It is scheduled for cinema release later this year.
