Susan Boyle and X Factor reject twins set to top Christmas charts
Tuesday, 24 November 2009
Susan Boyle's new album I Dreamed A Dream looks set to shift up to 150,000 copies on the first day of its release — and could be the Christmas number one, a store has said.
And the singles chart could be shaken up by another talent show sensation — X Factor rejects John and Edward — after the tuneless twins expressed an interest in releasing a festive song.
“We'd love to do all that stuff like TV shows because we feel like we have so much more to give,” said Edward.
“Our fans are so dedicated and we can't leave them standing around the place, so we need to keep supporting them so that all the Jedward memorabilia like T-shirts don't go out of date.”
John continued: “It's all about moving forward in the right direction. We want to do loads of different projects. We have to reinvent ourselves — it's about doing it for all the fans and all the people who have supported us because without them, we wouldn't have done as great as we have.”
The controversial Irish twins — who have become known as ‘Jedward’ — reckon it was the advice from pop star Robbie Williams that kept them in the competition for so long.
“The first week — which was Robbie Williams week — that was the week that everyone told us that we didn't deserve to be in the competition but he gave us loads of encouragement and told us to let go,” John told the Press Association.
“We took his advice and we made it to week seven. We're grateful for his support. We're really happy that he's a fan.”
Earlier, HMV said initial sales from the chain and other entertainment retailers suggested Susan Boyle's debut album has been selling an amount that most major new albums would typically sell in a week.
The figure includes massive online pre-orders that have been placed by customers over the past few weeks.
HMV is revising its estimate for total weekly sales upwards, from the 300,000 that the retailer initially projected, to a figure closer to 400,000.
This would make the album the biggest and fastest-selling release of 2009. The sales would be comparable to those of Take That's The Circus in December last year, which sold 432,490 copies in its week of release.
The chain reported that sales are particularly huge in Scotland, where some customers are snapping up multiple copies.
HMV is now also predicting that the album will be the Christmas number one.
The store's Gennaro Castaldo said: “The Susan Boyle story just keeps getting bigger and more fantastic.
“Our hmv.com online store had one of its largest-ever pre-orders for an album and now we're seeing a huge surge in demand in our stores, though especially in Susan's native Scotland.”
