Taio Cruz and Sade will be flying the flag for the Brits at this year's American Music Awards.

Break Your Heart singer/songwriter Taio found out he was nominated for Breakthrough Artist while helping to announce this year's nominees live in Los Angeles.

Speaking afterwards, the music producer admitted: "There are a lot of surprises for me right now!"

"I was not expecting it at all, it was a massive surprise and it feels great to be out here and just recognised for the music I've made so far.

"We were surprised at the first single doing so well, just shocked with the second single doing as well as it's done. Now being nominated for an AMA is just as surprising."

Taio could have a battle on his hands, as the singer is up against teen sensation Justin Bieber, who picked up four nominations.

"The kid has done good, he's very talented. I think he's great and very deserving," Taio insisted.

Eighties' songstress Sade, who is enjoying a very successful comeback in the US, picked up two nominations in the Soul/Rhythm & Blues category.

She features in the Favourite Female Artist list, going head-to-head against Alicia Keys and Rihanna, and is also up for Favourite Album where Soldier Of Love is up against Alicia Keys' The Element of Freedom and Usher's Raymond v Raymond.

The ceremony will take place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on November 21.
