The Killers Mr Brightside is most played song

Brandon Flowers of The Killers takes to the stage

Mr Brightside by US band The Killers has been named the most played song since the launch of online service last.fm.

And the chart - compiled to mark 40 billion plays on the streaming service - makes good reading for British bands who make up six of the top ten.

It launched in 2003.

Muse was the top UK act at number two, with Oasis, Coldplay and Radiohead also in the upper reaches of the list.

Last.fm recommends similar music choices to users each time they "scrobble" or play a song.

Users scrobble up to 800 songs per second when use of the service is at its peak.

Lady GaGa is the only woman to feature in the top 20 with Poker Face at number six with just over 6 million plays. It is also the most recent song, released only last year.

Mr Brightside was played 7.66 million times.
