U2 join MTV awards line-up

U2 are to perform at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Glasgow this weekend.

The band are the latest to be added to the line-up at the awards show, which will be hosted by US rapper Nicki Minaj in the Hydro arena and will also include performances by Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris and Ariana Grande among others.

It will be the fourth time the Irish band have played at the EMAs having last done so in Berlin in 2009.

U2 reached the top 10 of the album charts for the 16th time last month with Songs Of Innocence. The album was originally released for free via iTunes in September.

The awards are being held in Glasgow for the first time, but they have previously been staged in Edinburgh.

Katy Perry heads the nominations for the November 9 ceremony as she competes for seven prizes, ahead of Grande, who is in the running for six.

Pharrell Williams is up for five trophies, including best song and best video for his global hit Happy.

With music fans attending from across Europe and a potential worldwide audience of 500 million people, tourism leaders believe the event could be worth around £10 million to Glasgow.
