U2 to headline Glastonbury festival

U2 were forced to pull out of last year's music festival

U2 are to headline this summer's Glastonbury after the rock superstars had to pull out of last year's festival at the last minute.

The Irish band's 2010 date was axed when singer Bono suffered a back injury and Gorillaz were hastily lined up as a replacement.

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis said: "After the disappointment of U2 being unable to play last year, we're now doubly excited at the prospect of the Friday night supergroup breaking the sound barrier."

The quartet have announced they will be joining Beyonce and Coldplay as bill-toppers this June.

U2 will headline the Pyramid Stage at the event in Somerset on Friday June 24.

The date was announced by guitarist The Edge as he presented the best festival award to Glastonbury at Wednesday night's NME Awards.

The musician actually performed at last year's event when he had a guest spot with Muse playing Where The Streets Have No Name.

He said: "It's more a way of life than a festival. I made it last year to the Friday show - got to play with Muse, got to hang out, ate a veggie burger and fries, and got to play on the Pyramid Stage. I have to say there is something really special and iconic about that stage.

"So we're all looking forward to coming back to pick up where I left off. And we're so excited to get to play in front of the world's greatest festival audience. We'll see you there."
