U2 'to play three Dublin gigs in summer'

Speculation is mounting that U2 will play three dates at Croke Park this summer as part of a Europe-wide stadium tour.

The band is thought to have provisionally booked the 82,000-capacity ground for July 24, 25 and 26.

And it emerged last night that the neighbouring Jurys Hotel has tripled their prices for the dates.

Rooms are now selling at €299 per night for a superior bedroom compared to €99 the previous weekend.

General manager Edward Stephenson stressed that supply and demand issues had led to the price rise with the hotel already 85pc booked up.

"We have very high occupancy here for those dates," Mr Stephenson said.

"We have very little availability left so that would be the normal situation in a hotel that we would sell off rooms for a cheaper price first.

"A number of people have got very competitive rates for these dates."

Mr Stephenson did not confirm that the weekend's popularity was due to the U2 gig but admitted that there had been a lot of speculation about a possible event on those dates.

"For matches and concerts and other events, we would offer very good value for people who book early," Mr Stephenson added.

The north-Dublin rockers are not due to officially announce their tour dates until the middle of next month and tickets are expected to sell out fast.

Seems nearly everyone is out to make a buck! Thats not Bono's Hotel- Wonder what rates at the C. Hotel are going to be??Didnt he sell that hotel??

'The new song is one of the worst they have released as well - it looks like complacency has got the better of a once excellent band!'

i couldnt agree more, whats the song called get ur boots on is it?lol to that,..not exaclty a recession anthem is it? awfull video and song, wheel them out for another greatest hits show in the awfull croker, great for games but holding a concert there should be a warcrime as far as im conserned, if u2 have any self respect why dont they book the o2? thats a New purpose built venue with state of the art seating and acoustics....they have no concern for their fans.

Couldn't agree more with these comments, i seen them on the first night at croke park and was in cusack stand, the gig was awful, the sound was terrible, croke park swallowed them up. But sure the three dates will sell out, which is all that seems to matter to the band now, i won't be there.

Here are our "Kids from North Dublin" at it asgain. In these tough times what do they do move their euros off to Holland. What do they think of Ireland or the world for that matter...only lining their own pockets. Saw Neil Diamond in Croke Park and was in the Cusack Stand. Sound is all echoes so it was less than enjoyable. Would'nt be caught at the venue again and as for Bono and his team ...keep saving the world but not Ireland.

I went to see them at Slane and Croke Park on the first night they played last time. Slane on the first night was amazing, however the sound was atrocious for the Croke Park gig. If the stage is at the Hill16 end and you are in the Cusack Stand it is very detached. Most of the show was an engine for Bono's humanitarian efforts. Fair play for trying to save the world etc., but keep it for the politicians and not punters who have given you £70 of their hard earned money to see you perform. The set list was almost the same even though the Slane and Croke Park gigs were 4 years apart! Just switch the songs from the album at the time and it was all very predictable. All in all, I was very disappointed with their last Croke Park gig and wont be returning for this tour. The new song is one of the worst they have released as well - it looks like complacency has got the better of a once excellent band!

seen em at slane, they were good, croke park isint the best venue for concerts, its obvious they are after the money at this stage, if they wanted to they could do like acdc and play the o2 in dublin and maybe do a summer festival later in august,
