Carrie Underwood is to star in a live television broadcast of The Sound Of Music.

The US country music star - who shot to fame when she won talent show American Idol - will play Maria von Trapp in NBC's live performance based on the hit musical. It is due to air in 2013.

The role is Grammy-winner Carrie's most significant work as an actress yet.

She played a small part in the 2011 film Soul Surfer and has also appeared on TV's How I Met Your Mother.

Carrie, 29, has also served as co-host of the Country Music Association Awards for five years.
