Urban: Clashes are needed on Idol

Keith Urban is a judge on American Idol

Keith Urban thinks it's a good thing that his fellow American Idol fellow judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj don't get along.

The 45-year-old Australian country music star is enjoying his first season on the TV talent show, and believes the arguments are all part of what makes it popular.

Keith said: "Being on this panel, I love the colour of it all - Nicki, Randy (Jackson) and Mariah. I like being on this panel. I like that we don't agree on everything. We come from different places. I think that's important."

As well as judging Idol, the singer is currently recording songs for a new album, planning his summer tour, organising a charity concert, and flying back and forth to London where his wife Nicole Kidman is living with their two young daughters while she shoots a film.

"There's a lot of creativity happening right now," he said. "I'm also building a studio at my house, just for the heck of it. Why not? Let's do that, too. I had several meetings on a Sunday with various people, and it was like I'm choosing colour fabrics for something or other and thinking about the song I've got to cut in the studio today. Dear Lord."

But Keith is excited by being so busy.

"I know in 30 years' time, I'm going to look back at this moment and go, 'Oh, my God, what a great time. I should have enjoyed that more,'

"So I really think of that and it's sort of like I exhale and just slow down and go, 'OK, what's the next thing? What's the next thing?'"
