What will be the One song that U2 fans love the most?
Friday, 27 February 2009
U2’s One is on track to become the band’s greatest ever song, according to a new online poll.
With anticipation surrounding the release of U2's new studio album, No Line On The Horizon, which is out today in the Republic of Ireland, and on Monday in the UK — HMV's music and films social network site getcloser.com has asked U2 fans to list their favourite song by the band.
More than 1,000 people have taken part in the spot poll, and so far a fifth have voted for One (20.1%), ahead of With Or Without You (15.2%) and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (10%). Beautiful Day (7.9%) and Where The Streets Have No Name (7.7%) make up the rest of the top five.
The poll remains open and fans can vote over the weekend at www.getcloser.com/content/u2poll.aspx
Hmv’s getcloser.com content manager Matt Potter said: “It was very close to begin with between One and With Or Without You.
“But then One started to pull away and comfortably appears to be the favourite U2 song among fans — it's arguably become the band's anthem.”
Queues began forming earlier this week at two of HMV's Republic of Ireland stores in Dublin’s Grafton Street and Galway, which opened at midnight last night to be the first anywhere in the world to sell copies of the new U2 album.
Hardcore U2 fans Vincent Kearns (42) and Martin Shanahan (47) were among the first to queue outside HMV's Dublin Grafton Street store, camping out since Monday, February 23.
Meanwhile, in another first, U2 joined the likes of David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Duffy and Beyonce as the latest artists to take part in HMV's acclaimed My |Inspiration campaign — which invites musicians to nominate the song lyric that has most inspired them in their life and in their work.
Unlike other bands who have previously participated, however, each member of U2 has been invited to make their own personal selection.
Larry Mullen Jr has gone for the opening line from The Ramones' Rockaway Beach, The Edge has picked Leonard Cohen's Anthem and Adam Clayton nominates Arctic Monkeys' Fake Tales of San Francisco.
Bono has opted for Bob Dylan's Visions Of Johanna as the lyric that has most inspired him — making him the tenth artist to select a Dylan lyric.

No sign of The Unforgettable Fire.... Definately my favourite and merits at least a mention. Seems like a lot of the older material has been overlooked......???????
