Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling

Album number six for Glasgow's finest purveyors of post-rock; and for fans real (Ian Rankin) and fictional (Inspector Rebus), more majestic instrumentals with intriguing and irreverent names to investigate.

As usual with Mogwai albums, passages of majestic beauty sit side by side with "songs" built on darker textures: the distortion of "Batcat", say. 'The Hawk Is Howling' is often awesome – it sounds like Tortoise would, if they weren't so intent on making musical mathematics.

As for those intriguing and irreverent names: to whom might we suppose "Scotland's Shame" is referring?

Pick of the Album: 'I Love You I'm Going to Blow Up Your School': as good as its title
