Pulling the Black Rabbit out of the hat at Yello
Friday, 6 February 2009
The production/DJ duo responsible for the 2007 crossover club/chart hit Thou Shalt Always Kill are back in town once again, playing an early show at Stiff Kitten tonight.
Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip last played Belfast at 2008's Belsonic Festival and shortly afterwards, hooked up with De La Soul's Posdnous to update and re-record their hit debut single, which was released last month.
The exotic-sounding pair actually both hail from the same small town in Essex and cemented their creative partnership by signing to Rob da Bank's Sunday Best label and releasing their first album, Angles, last year.
Tonight's support comes from Co Antrim hip-hoppers Team Fresh, doors open at 9pm and the £10 door price includes admission for indie club Medicine, which kicks off shortly after the live show.
London-based club night Black Rabbit has been bouncing all over the world since 2006, with resident DJs Guy Williams, Kelly Love, Chris Bones and Justin Robertson bigging up the beats at a variety of international festivals.
Guy Williams is bringing some of the brand's trademark party vibes to club Yello tomorrow night along with DJ Lottie, making her first return to the venue since her sell-out debut back in May 2007.
The Mancunian mix mistress began her DJ-ing career at the legendary Hacienda club, before a slew of awards landed her a residency at London's Turnmills club and a guest, presenting slot on Pete Tong's Essential Selection show.
The Black Rabbit night at Yello should see plenty of happy bunnies on the dancefloor at the Cathedral Quarter night spot. Doors open at midnight and the music runs until 6am, with a special reduced entry price of £5 for students and off-duty bar/club staff.
And girls are also on top next door at Club Mynt's Vibe tomorrow night, as Fierce Angel's Lisa German joins resident Tina Hart to launch the club's month-long, all-female showcase series with a hard-hitting house set.
Portrush club Traks! has managed something of a coup by booking DJ Mallorca Lee, just as the remix of Operation Blade by his project Public Domain is currently storming the dance charts.
Despite the song being an evergreen club anthem since its original release in 2000, the new treatment from Scot Project and DJ BK will introduce the tune's famous “Bass in the Place, London!” refrain to a whole new generation of clubbers.
As well as being a supremely skilled DJ, Lee is known for his energetic performances behind the decks and during his last appearance at Traks!, he injured his hand after jumping from the DJ box for a spot of crowd surfing.
Declining all offers of a trip to the local A&E, the brave wee Scots soldier dismissed all the blood and bruising with the comment “This is mild, man, I do things like that all the time!”
So be prepared for low-flying DJs around Portrush tomorrow night!
Expect plenty of running in the corridors, uniform violations and a few indiscretions behind the bikesheds as Skool Disco at the Limelight celebrates its seventh birthday on Thursday night.
Launched on St Valentine's night back in 2002, the monthly feast of cheesy tuneage and penny chews from the tuckshop has become one of Belfast's longest-running and most popular theme nights. For the celebrations, yours truly will be donning the old school tie and playing a selection of playground classics, ranging from Scooter to Steps and Paul Simon to PJ & Duncan. Doors at 10pm and reduced admission of £3 to anyone dressed in uniform.
