U2 last brought their tour to Belfast 18 years ago.

Then it was the Popmart Tour which further emphasised the band's reputation for big brash shows.

Botanic gardens was dominated by a giant football pitch-sized television screen, a giant golden arch with pineapple-shaped speakers, an olive on a 100ft high cocktail stick and of course the Lemon.

The "giant supermarket" as the band called it was their attempt to be the "biggest, boldest and brashest" band on the planet.

Many said it succeeded.

It was Tuesday, August 29 1997 and some 40,000 of the band's "closest friends" flocked to the unique venue.

One man even canoed up the Lagan to get closer to the action.

Bono promised a lot of noise while leaving the politics to the politicians.
