Britain’s Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon loves singing live because she enjoys a “challenge”.

The 36-year-old star was quizzed about her nerves ahead of her performance of new single The Way We Are on the UK talent show tomorrow. Referring to the criticism fellow TV judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has received in the past for pre-recording her musical appearances, Alesha insists she has every confidence in her ability to sing and dance live.

“I’m not afraid. In the past Cheryl has been given a bit of stick, but we’re different artists. I’m not one of these people who shy away from a challenge,” she is quoted as saying by British newspaper The Sun. “I always sing live, that’s standard for me. It’s my job so that’s why I have got to look after myself.”

Alesha has been putting in the hours to make sure she is ready for her moment on stage. The singer, who previously won Strictly Come Dancing, has been perfecting an intricate dance routine to accompany her new single and wants it to be perfect.

“I have been working with a trainer because I want to make sure I have stamina. When I perform it’s full on and energetic, so I have to make sure I’m fit and can cope with that. I’ve been doing a lot of workouts where I also sing,” she explained. “I was doing a training session the other day and my trainer had me doing these squat jumps.

“When you finish doing them you are really out of breath and that’s when she makes me sing. Whenever I am on the running machine I always sing because it’s a really good way of preparing your body for singing live.”

The pretty singer also insists she would never turn to fellow judge Simon Cowell for help with her music career. Alesha has ruled out joining the music mogul’s record label and is happy with the way things are working out.

“No! I’m doing this all independently and that’s how I’ve always wanted to do it,” she replied when asked if she would ever be tempted to Simon’s label. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years now and doing it on my own label feels very rewarding and more personal.”

Britain’s Got Talent’s live semi-finals continue tonight.
