Alexandr Magala: 'BGT made me who I am today'

Britain's Got Talent sword swallower Alexandr Magala has revealed he has been watching the show from day one, and credits the programme for "making me who I am today".

Alexandr Magala had to keep his sword swallowing skills a secret while growing up.

The 26-year-old stunned judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon on Saturday night's Britain's Got Talent (09Apr16) when he risked his life by sticking the blade down his throat.

Alexandr hails from Moldova originally, but has been living in Los Angeles for the past few years. Growing up with such a unique talent was difficult for Alexandr, who admits he didn't tell his parents what he was doing.

"I didn't tell anyone because I'm from a conservative country and any unusual activities you do, people don't really support," Alexandr said during an interview on Good Morning Britain on Monday (11Apr16). "So I had to keep it quiet, do my thing and hope for a shot that one day I will hit it."

Viewers took to Twitter during Alexandr's audition to express their shock and horror at his talent. He has already been tipped for victory on the ITV show, and admitted his love of the series began when it started back in 2007.

"First of all I want to say it's really an honour for me to be on the stage because I was watching the show from season one and I was seeing all these talented and crazy people," he said. "Basically this show made me who I am. It's the tenth season for the show and it's really hard to make a step up... to do something (that impresses)."

Good Morning Britain showed a graphic of just how the sword descends through Alexandr's body when he performs his act. Learning such a skill has been a dangerous pursuit, and the buff star admits he has caused himself some injuries over the years.

"Unfortunately I have made mistakes," he said. "It's very dangerous and sometimes you have to make a sacrifice.... You cut yourself, you cut your throat."

Asked if he thinks he can win this year's series of Britain's Got Talent, Alexandr replied: "I don't know - I will do my best. I'm putting my life on the line...!"
