Alicia too stunning for TV

Alicia Silverstone lost Claire Danes’ role on My So-Called Life because she was “too beautiful”.

Although Alicia, 16 at the time, was the first choice to star as Angela Chase in the cult US TV show, the part ended up going to Claire Danes. Claire was considered less glamorous and more like a schoolgirl.

“Alicia is so beautiful that that would have affected her experience of the world,” co-creator Marshall Herskovitz said in a New Yorker magazine profile of the actress.

“People would have been telling her she was beautiful since she was six years old. You can’t put that face in what’s been written for this girl.”

But casting director Linda Lowy knew Claire was perfect for the gritty teen show about binge drinking, promiscuity and homosexuality amongst other things.

“From the minute she walked in the room, Claire was chilling, astounding, and silent,” Lowy said about the then-13-year-old. “There was so much power coming out of her without her doing much.”

Lowy and others were so impressed with Claire’s audition “no one could really speak” after the actress left.

While the role of Angela propelled Claire to stardom, Alicia went on to play Cher Horowitz in Clueless. Her portrayal of the dim but kind character launched her career and made her a superstar.

My So-Called Life aired in the US between 1994 and 1995 and also starred Jared Leto.
