Alun Armstrong has revealed he gets letters from New Tricks fans asking for advice to deal with their husbands.
The 67-year-old actor plays Brian Lane, a socially inept and eccentric recovering alcoholic with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder in the BBC One detective show.
Alun told the TV Times: "The reaction to Brian has been fantastic - people love him.
"For years I've been getting letters from women who identify with his other half, Esther. They say, 'My husband's exactly like Brian Lane, can you give me any advice?'
"I just tell them to speak to a doctor!"
Alun and co-star Amanda Redman have decided to leave the show about retired police officers who have been recruited to reinvestigate unsolved crimes after 10 years. They will be replaced by Nicholas Lyndhurst and Tamzin Outhwaite, who will join Denis Waterman.
Alun revealed: "We've got really close - it's been 10 years of an awful lot of laughs. We've never had any rows and we work really well together.
"We'll all still meet up - even after James [Bolam] left we dragged him to London. We'll be the New Tricks gang forever."
