Alyssa Milano warns: 'Don't wait to have children'

The actress admits being an older mum has its struggles.

Actress Alyssa Milano has warned women not to wait too long to start a family.

The Charmed star was 38 when she welcomed her first child, Milo, and admits she's very familiar with the struggles of becoming a mother later in life.

Now a 43-year-old mother-of-two, Alyssa admits her journey to parenthood was "scary", and although she believes there are benefits to having children at an older age, she would encourage wannabe mums to start thinking about their futures sooner rather than later.

The actress expressed her views during an appearance on U.S. talk show The View, as the celebrity panel, including Whoopi Goldberg, discussed Janet Jackson's decision to postpone her world tour again to start "planning our family" with her billionaire husband Wissam Al Mana, who she wed in 2012.

While the 49-year-old singer did not specify if she was actually pregnant in her announcement on Wednesday (06Apr16), Alyssa fears Janet will face some struggles becoming a first-time mum at her age.

"Here's the thing: you reach an age and you've accomplished everything you want to accomplish in your career and you're a success and then it's time to have children," Alyssa began. "I love that she's recognising that, but I will say that I do think it's dangerous for women to think that they can wait until they're 50, because everyone doesn't have the money that Janet Jackson has, and she puts forward this thing (idea), where young women throughout the world are going to say, 'You know what? I can wait', and you shouldn't wait."

"It costs a lot of money," she explained as she referred to the fertility treatment more mature women require, "and if having a family is important to you, people need to prioritise for that.

"I waited until I was 38 to have my son, and then 41 to have my daughter, and it was scary...," she confessed.

Alyssa couldn't be happier with her four-year-old Milo and 18-month-old daughter Elizabella, but she lamented, "It's not so easy to get out of a bouncy house at 43!"

Milo and Elizabella are the actress' children with husband Dave Bugliari. The couple wed in 2009.
