Angelina Jolie drawn to darkness

Angelina Jolie always preferred screen villains and often found the heroes "boring".

The Hollywood beauty is gearing up for the release of her latest movie Maleficent, where she takes on the title role of the evil fairy hell bent on causing destruction. Far from yearning to play a princess, Angelina admits it was always the villains that intrigued her most.

"I did always love Maleficent, I didn’t always love Sleeping Beauty," Angelina laughed to MailOnline. "I found Prince Charming and all that rather boring when I was little but this Prince Charming is much cooler."

As for her children, Angelina says her championing of the unconventional character has been passed on to her brood of six.

"Maddox [her son] always loved Dumbo when he was little and I always found that very sad, the mum who went mad and was locked up leaving the boy by himself," she mused. "I did love that story because there was something considered wrong with him because it was different but then it was the thing that was great about him and I always thought that was a great message."

As well as enjoying the experience of making a film her kids enjoyed, Angelina was also mindful about the wider Disney audience.

The animated version of Sleeping Beauty was released in 1959, and has amassed a loyal following. Taking on one of cinema's most iconic baddies wasn't a decision the Oscar-winner took lightly.

"I was very scared to take it on that I would disappoint the fans and I’m one of them, I was a big fan of hers when I was little and then when you get into it you just want to make sure you make some bold choices and there’s no going back with a character like that,’ she confessed.

"You just have to really think of the audience and really try to be as entertaining and as full on as possible so you don’t disappoint and everyone has a good time watching the movie."
