Anne Hathaway: Parents made me strong

Anne Hathaway has thanked her parents for giving her confidence.

The American actress achieved her Oscar dream last year when she was presented with an Academy Award for her portrayal of Fantine in Les Misérables. She believes it's thanks to her parents that she has such a positive attitude.

"I've got to give credit to my parents here," she told British magazine Hello! when asked where her self-confidence comes from. "They raised me to believe that I could do anything. And they were careful not to base it on gender - they always said: 'Don't let anyone tell you you can't do anything because you're a girl.' I was very lucky to start my life knowing that two people who loved me very much had such confidence in me. Now, as for me learning how to get confidence in myself - well, that's a different journey and one I'm still on."

Anne hasn't just enjoyed a bout of professional good luck. The 31-year-old married Adam Shulman in 2012, after almost four years of dating.

"When Adam and I were dating, I had the feeling that I wasn't a good enough person for him, and normally that feeling would have made me want to leave, but this time I couldn't because I was too much in love with him," she opened up. "So I thought: 'OK, I'm just going to have to make the commitment to grow here.' And now that we're married, there's even more motivation to step up to the plate because my life is no longer my own. Everything that I do affects him and vice versa."

Anne stars in Rio 2, where she lends her voice to animated bird Jewel.
