Anne Robinson is to bow out of Watchdog after more than 20 years.

The 70-year-old presenter recently proved a ratings hit with her BBC One documentary Britain's Spending Secrets and is to present a major new series for the channel.

As a result she is stepping down as one of the co-hosts of consumer awareness show Watchdog.

Robinson said: "It's been an honour to be part of the most important consumer show in Britain."

The Weakest Link star presented Watchdog from 1993 to 2001 before returning in 2009, clocking up a total of 15 years on the show.

Charlotte Moore, controller of BBC One, said: "Annie is a much-treasured part of the BBC One family and I'm grateful for everything she has done on Watchdog for nearly 15 years. I'm looking forward to her returning to the channel with a new factual series next year."

Britain's Spending Secrets - which saw Robinson rummaging through a supermarket skip for free food and poking through the cupboards of the very wealthy as she investigated their spending habits - raked in 5.7 million viewers, making it the BBC's most watched new factual series on television this year.

As a result of its success, BBC One has commissioned a new series which Robinson will begin filming in the autumn.

Watchdog will return with a new series this autumn. Matt Allwright and Chris Hollins are set to return and will be joined by a new line-up of presenters to be announced soon.
