Armagh student scoops NI Young Musician of the Year award
A Co Armagh student has scooped the title of NI Young Musician of the Year. Samuel Kane (17) from Portadown College impressed judges with his performance of the second movement of the Sibelius violin concerto in D minor.
The competition, now in its 25th year, was organised by the Rotary Club of Comber and took place at Strathearn School, Belfast last Saturday. Samuel said he was "stunned" at the win.
Runner-up was Gary Hunt (17) from Campbell College, Belfast, whose interpretation of Fauré's Elégie on cello was described as "beautifully delivered".
Rebecca Doherty (17) from Londonderry claimed third prize.
Winner of the prize for the best under-16 finalist was pianist Christopher McDonald (12) from St Colman's College in Newry.
