Tim Peake made history as the first British citizen to walk in space - but the astronaut has spoken of his disbelief after landing his very own Blue Peter badge.

The 44-year-old was presented with the Gold Blue Peter badge for his "inspirational work" and for his involvement with the long-running children's BBC show.

And Major Peake responded: "I can't believe that I now have my very own Gold Blue Peter badge.

"It's been amazing to have the viewers of Blue Peter so involved with my mission to space.

"I hope that I have shown them that anything is possible and I can't wait till they are standing up here in years to come telling their own story of science and exploration."

The former Army test pilot enjoyed a six-month mission to the International Space Station in 2015.

Blue Peter editor Ewan Vinnicombe said: "When Blue Peter began 58 years ago, our viewers could only dream of space exploration.

"Today, Tim Peake shows that any dream can become a reality.

"His tireless work and positivity has been an inspiration to thousands of our viewers and with his deserved Gold Blue Peter badge, he will be sure to inspire many more."

Previous recipients of the Gold Blue Peter badge include the Queen, JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, who was awarded the badge posthumously, and film-maker Steven Spielberg .

Blue Peter previously held a competition to design the astronaut's mission patch, which Major Peake wore throughout his time in space.

:: Viewers can see Major Peake receive his Gold Blue Peter badge on CBBC at 5pm on Thursday.
