Beckinsale: Husband alarmed by daughter
Kate Beckinsale says husband Len Wiseman was stunned by the prospect of having a teenage stepdaughter, although he’s a wonderful dad.
The 40-year-old actress, who shares 14-year-old Lily with ex-partner Michael Sheen, blended families when she married Underworld director Len Wiseman in 2004.
And Kate admits the first of her daughter’s teen years were somewhat of a shock to Michael, who loves being a dad.
“Len was initially a bit alarmed,” she told America’s C magazine.
“I think teenage girls are a little frightening to dads, but he’s usually in the thick of it. And if he’s not, he’s one of those brilliant people who doesn’t mind when they find him in his man cave and tease him mercilessly.”
Kate takes parenting very seriously, insisting her role as a mother is the most important she’s ever taken on.
The actress is an only child and said she’s fortunate to have such a wonderful role model in her own mother.
“As a parent, you are never off the hook. Never. It’s a full-time job. I mean, how many times do I call my mother. Stricken with something going, ‘Help! Help!’ And I’m very old to be doing these things,” she said.
Kate is currently filming Michael Winterbottom drama The Face of an Angel, about a journalist chasing a murder story.
The Total Recall star admits thinking of herself as an action movie heroine still comes as a shock.
“If you’d asked me when I was at Oxford, ‘Do you think you’ll ever be running up and down holding a machine gun as a bad guy in a big American movie?’ I would have said, ‘God, no!’” she mused.
