Bello comes out

Maria Bello

Maria Bello has been in a relationship with her best female friend for over a year.

In a piece written for the New York Times, the 46-year-old actress says she has been dating her best female friend. In the heartfelt passage called Coming Out as a Modern Family, Maria explains how she told her 12-year-old son about it.

"This was the moment I had been anticipating and dreading for months," Maria wrote. "I took a deep breath, knowing that my answer, and his response, would have an impact on our lives for a very long time. I was with someone romantically and I hadn't told him. I had become involved with a woman who was my best friend, and, as it happens, a person who is like a godmother to my son."

Maria goes on to admit she was constantly depressed by how her past relationships never worked out. The Coyote Ugly star had dated both men and women, but was always disappointed, a realization she came to through reading old diaries.

"I read about the handful of men and the one woman I had been in romantic relationships with, passages rife with pain and angst… As I continued to look through photos, I came across a black-and-white one of my best friend and me taken on New Year’s Eve. We looked so happy, I couldn’t help but smile,” she wrote.

Maria says this moment a year ago was what made her consider being in a romantic relationship with her friend Clare.

The star was previously linked to TV executive Dan McDermott, Jack’s father.
