Former England footballer David Beckham has marked turning 40 today by joining Instagram.

The star posted a picture of himself lying in bed, with the caption: "Good morning and hello! It's great to finally be on Instagram, been a long time coming but I can't wait to start sharing all my special moments with you.

"Thank you for all your birthday messages so far. Looking forward to a great day with friends and family x."

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player had more than 700,000 followers only hours after joining the social media site.

Beckham is said to be celebrating his big day with a star-studded party in Marrakesh, Morocco.

His wife Victoria used her Twitter account to hint at her husband's birthday plans, posting a picture of a dress and even giving the event its own hashtag - #DB40.

She later posted a picture of the couple with their arms wrapped around each other stood by an aeroplane. Her tweet said: "So excited to be celebrating David's birthday x #DB40"

Among the friends likely to be joining Beckham for the big day is Dave Gardner, a football agent who met him when they were team-mates in the Manchester United youth set-up, and Mr Gardner's girlfriend, US actress Liv Tyler.

Beckham shares his birthday today with singer Lily Allen (who's turning 30), designer Donatella Versace (who's turning 60) and, of course, the royal baby if it is born today.

Victoria Beckham confirmed the family are celebrating David's 40th birthday in Morocco.

She posted a photo on Instagram of herself and David with the caption: "So excited to be spending this special day with David and the kids in Marrakech! Welcome to Instagram @DavidBeckham! x vb #DB40"
