Blumenthal: I never want to fail

Heston Blumenthal has admitted he has moments when his "brain just fries" while he's making his TV shows.

The television chef, who has a new series, Heston's Great British Food, prides himself on succeeding when it comes to his culinary creations - even if failure might make good TV.

"Last week I wasn't happy with anything we'd done. It's so much work, my brain just fries," said the cook, who explores the origins of classic British dishes and new ways of serving them in his new show.

"For the first time ever, I turned to the director and said I didn't think I could do something. I thought we'd failed. He was OK with that, and from a TV point of view I suppose it would be good.

"But I've not failed on a challenge before. Even when that giant ice cream looked like it was going to collapse in the last series, we brought it back. I don't want to fail at anything."

Heston puts his trademark twist on dishes such as fish and chips and roast beef in the show.

The 47-year-old hinted that after the long months of development and such a stressful filming schedule, he quite likes the idea of a "normal" TV series - where he picks a few dishes, stands in a studio and cooks.

"You know, I would really, really like to do that," he said, deadpan. "Seriously, I'd love it. I did a few things like that for the shows we did for Channel 4 on eggs. Still with a bit of science, but mainly home cooking. Wouldn't that be something?"
