Bridget Jones's Baby in UK top five highest-grossing films in just four weeks
Bridget Jones's Baby has entered the UK top five highest-grossing films of 2016 after just four weeks in cinemas, figures show.
Renee Zellweger's romcom took just over £8 million in its first week and after a month has made £37.9 million at British box offices.
If current momentum continues it could end up top of the pile and unseat The Jungle Book, which has made £46.2 million following its release in mid-April.
The Disney reboot of Rudyard Kipling's stories took nearly £10 million in the first week and had earned £36.8 million after a month - one million less than the third Bridget Jones instalment.
However, no film has come close to the figure notched up by Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the end of last year, which had taken nearly £110 million after four weeks.
Released at the end of July, Finding Dory sits in second place with UK earnings of £42 million having become one of the most successful animated films of all-time after earning more than one billion US Dollars worldwide.
There are four superhero movies in the provisional 2016 top 10: Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad.
Eddie The Eagle, a film about the British ski-jumping underdog, was the highest-earning UK independent release having grossed more than £8.5 million.
Magical adventure film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, in cinemas in November, could be a potential challenger for top spot, while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released mid-December is also hotly anticipated.
There were 18.1 million cinema admissions across the UK in August, the highest monthly total of 2016 so far for which figures are available.
