Brooke Shields: I'm my mom's artwork
Brooke Shields isn't sure she ever really understood her mother Teri.
The 49-year-old actress had a difficult relationship with her mom Teri, who died in 2012. Teri pushed her daughter to make it in showbiz, with Brooke making her acting debut in an advert when she was 11 months old.
Her mother was also an alcoholic, who would leave Brooke with other people so she could go out in the evenings. And as the star got older, it was her mother who found her dates.
"I was her greatest creation," Brooke is quoted as saying by People magazine, which is excerpting her new book There Was a Little Girl.
"It was us against the world.
"Even though I understood her better than anybody else, I'm not sure I ever understood her fully."
The actress is mother to daughters Rowan, 11, and eight-year-old Grier with her husband Chris Henchy and becoming a parent changed a lot for her. She realised she could have a life away from her mother, but also learn to have a healthier relationship with her. However, it was around this time that Teri's dementia became apparent.
"Her brain had so long remained seemingly sharp. I was sure it would be her liver that went," she explained in her book.
Including so much about her mom in the tome has been cathartic for the star, and her way of showing people there were many different sides to Teri. Now when she thinks about her, Brooke tends to focus on the moments when they laughed so much they "couldn't breathe".
The star also explains her decision to place Teri's ashes on the bar in her living room.
"[It's so] she could remain forever close to the two most important things in her life: me and booze," the actress wrote.
