Bruce battles illness ahead of show

Sir Bruce Forsyth had to miss Friday's 'walk-through' rehearsal for the BBC1 show

Sir Bruce Forsyth is hoping the show will go on as he battles a bout of ill health in a bid to host Saturday's Strictly Come Dancing semi-final.

The veteran TV host had to miss Friday's "walk-through" rehearsal for the BBC1 show and headed home to rest after picking up a cold bug.

But show bosses are expecting him to bounce back in time for the live show which will whittle the five remaining contestants down to four finalists.

The 84-year-old star has missed Strictly only once before through ill health. He had to miss a week "on doctor's orders" in 2009 after being struck down with flu, with his co-host Tess Daly taking the lead on the show.

A programme source said: "We're pretty sure he will be back to do the show." Producers have contingency plans in case of illness among the presenters.

In Saturday's show Louis Smith, Lisa Riley, Denise Van Outen, Dani Harmer and Kimberley Walsh will each be performing two routines with their professional partners. It is the first heat of the series in which the couples have had to do more than one dance.

At stake is a place in next week's final and the chance to get their hands on the glitterball trophy.

Last week's show produced a shock when Denise, who had excelled for many weeks, found herself in the dance-off after her heel became tangled in her dress on Saturday night.

However, she and partner James Jordan remained in the contest when judges chose her to continue at the expense of former Westlife singer Nicky Byrne.

Louis topped the leader board with the first perfect score of the series, even managing to secure full marks from hard-to-please Craig Revel Horwood.
