Buckley: I'm not copying Sir David

James Buckley hopes viewers approve of his Del Boy

James Buckley has insisted he is not trying to impersonate Sir David Jason in his role as a young Del Boy.

The actor, known for playing foul-mouthed Jay in The Inbetweeners, plays an early incarnation of the Only Fools And Horses cockney in Rock And Chips, which returns for a Christmas special.

James said: "I wasn't trying to do a David Jason impression, but there are very small traits of Del Boy that I tried to put in the part."

And he said Sir David's approval is not the be all and end all to him, but rather that of the viewers.

"It's lovely to have a bit of support from someone like David Jason but this is something we're doing now and its our own thing. We're making it for the British public, for fans of Only Fools And Horses and for new fans of Rock And Chips."

The Christmas special charts what Del is up to after leaving school and shows how his mum is coping with young child Rodney.

:: Rock And Chips is on BBC One today (December 29).
